Description:
Compound leverage "tongs" type tool; a screw adjustment sets the effective opening size to match the thickness of the materials to be riveted.

The BUCKEYE COMPOUND LEVERAGE riveter was widely advertised in agricultural journals and newspapers.

A reference to this patent in Jas. M. Sears & Co. (Salem, OH) advertisements for the I.X.L. Riveter hints the broad concepts in the claims were used as the basis for structures with a significantly different physical appearance.

The patent was challenged and found to be valid and enforceable; the summary of the case in West's 109 FEDERAL REPORTER includes elements of review of pertinent patent history. One mention of a "Jaberg License" hints at subsequent use of the patent. Corresponding Canadian patent CA-55,477 was effective April 1, 1897.
