Description:
The invention is a double-cylinder engine where the pistons were powered alternately. This is one of a pair of patents covering various improvements (see also patent GB-180,502,863.) The engine operation is a high-pressure design similar to Trevithick's single-expansion design coupled with a low-pressure stage; the result is less temperature change per cylinder and reduced overall heat loss. This fuel-efficient engine design influenced designers around the world, especially where coal is more expensive.
