Vintage Machinery entry for Hoggson & Pettis Mfg. Co.
Description:
In 1879 the inventor had been superintendent of the E. Horton & Son Co., a prominent maker of lathe chucks; Sweetland's earlier patent 211,943 was manufactured by them.

This chuck design was intended for "holding pulleys or other thin cylindrical work without crushing". Each jaw has a circumferential groove with set-screw for holding the thin walls of those work-pieces. This modification could be incorporated into virtually any chuck design, and without much additional cost.
