Description: |
The invention is a tenor trombone with three piston valves in addition to the usual slide. It was manufactured by Holton Musical Instruments, a division of G. Leblanc. Corp., as their "superbone" model TR-395. The superbone was developed in collaboration with Maynard Ferguson who was best known as a trumpeter but who also played the trombone and had earlier played a valved trombone with a shortened slide that had been manufactured by Conn in the first half of the 20th century. The Holton superbone was never a big seller, being somewhat looked down on by trombone specialists, and Holton ceased production of it in the early 2000s. Austrian instrument maker Schagerl still makes a superbone, and it is of better quality than those available from offshore manufacturers, and also better quality than the Holton. |
