Description: |
In this invention, a rock drill uses a drill rod that passes through a hollow steam-engine piston, and a mechanism alternately grasps the rod and throws it forward. This mechanism works in any orientation as compared to the gravity-powered drills that were common at the time. Couch's assistant, Joseph W. Fowle, would improve on this design by connecting the rod to the cross-head of the engine: see patent 7,972. |
