Wikipedia biography of Orestes Cleveland
Description:
The innovation is a method of constructing a pencil that uses a dovetailed connection to attach the two pieces of wood together in order to minimize problems created when humidity caused the glue to weaken.

In 1850 Orestes Cleveland had partnered with Joseph Dixon in Dixon Crucible Co., manufacture of graphite products—mainly crucibles for producing iron and steel, but also including pencils, which would become a mainstay product for the firm.
