Description:
The innovation relates to a steam-boiler water gauge, and involves the use of a sight glass with 90-degree ribs on the inside surface and takes advantage of the different indexes of refraction of water versus air or steam. Light entering the upper part of the gauge (backed by air or steam) undergoes total internal reflection and that part of the sight-glass appears white or light gray, whereas light entering the lower part of that gauge does not reflect at all and hence that part of the gauge appears black. This innovation proved to be effective and useful, and ribbed glass became standard in steam-boiler water gauges.
