|
Description: |
The patent is a nut wrench with the adjusting screw resting on a shoulder that can be shifted to one of several notches on the main shank. The shoulder is held in place by a spring.
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" cites an 1864 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN item that implies McDonald was producing the wrench.
According to several web sites, McDonald sold this patent to the Coes company for $500.00. The A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co. "History" says, "After the war, A.Y. ... sold his wrench patent to an anonymous man who appeared in Dubuque for the sole purpose of purchasing this patent." McDonald was issued another patent for a similar combination quick and screw adjust wrench on March 28, 1865 (pat no. 47,067). |
