Description: |
| Pipe wrench with a spring-tensioned hook jaw and sliding adjustable jaw.
A known example is marked only with "Pat'd" & "1901." It corresponds to photo #703 in "Antique & Unusual Wrenches."
A contemporary brief notice said GALION DROP FORGE had secured rights to produce two of Smythe's wrench patents, without specifying which two. (Galion Drop Forge was founded in 1898 and faced bankruptcy in 1901.)
Ken Cope's entry for LANIUS MACHINE Co. (Bucyrus, OH) in AMERICAN WRENCH MAKERS 1830-1930 shows a drawing of this wrench, citing this patent and 680,285. |
