| Description: | | The blade and the beam are soldered together. Known example is marked "B & D / BANGOR Me" and "Pat. Oct. 6 1857" it is assumed B & D stands for Bailey and Darling. Patent was reissued as RE2,869. Samuel Darling also claims to "...believe myself to be the first inventor or discoverer of a toungue for squares, which is hardened at the edges and soft in the center, as above described, and although I have not specifically claimed it, yet I intend to do so in due time." He did just that in this patent's reissue, RE2,869. | |
