Description: |
The 1841 Loring Coes patent was the basis for monkey wrenches manufactured for the next century.
Fig.2 in the colored drawings represents the "Merrick Patent" (patent no. 9030X) which Coes noted to contrast the "one-handed operation" of his design. The photo of a partially disassembled "original Coes" wrench was introduced as evidence in patent infringement law suits between the Collins Company and Loring Coes in the late 1870s and early 1880s. |
