| Description: | | The attachment is a pair of detachable jaw components designed to temporarily convert a nut wrench to a pipe wrench or pipe cutter. The wrench shown in the illustration is Read's May 13, 1873 patent (no. 138,932). In the specifications, Read discusses modifying the adjusting knurl of a nut wrench to accept a "claw wrench" to provide extra force to make such a jaw grip or cut pipe. The illustration for Read's May 24, 1881 patent (no. 241,881) shows this adaptation.
A Nov. 15, 1879 AMERICAN MACHINIST article describes the wrench with pipe gripping and pipe cutter attachments in terms that imply Read was producing them. | |
