It appears that Mr. Manning pretended to be a Canadian resident to evade the restriction that Canadian patents were only granted to Canadians.This patent was mentioned in an ad in a 1858-12-25 issue of Scientific American.The 1860-02-04 issue of Scientific American carries a front-page article on this machine. The article concludes, "The patent for this invention was issued, through the Scientific American patent Agency, to Wilsie Manning, of Rouse's Point, N. Y., March 2, 1858, and persons desiring further information in relation to it will please address W. Manning & Co., Rochester, N. Y." |
