| Description: | | Screw threads, provided with cutting edges, are rounded at the end to approximate a "gouge lip" bit. The lead screw is optional. This patent gimlet is reported in a tool kit made by H. S. Shepardson & Co., called the Family Tool Chest. Correspondent James Fox reports that a 1958 book, History & Tradition of Shelburne, Massachusetts, says that this firm was making "the original Patent Double Cut Bits—Gimlets, Family Tool Chests, etc." That book also notes that H. S. Shepardson & Co. was created in 1871 with the union of tool makers (Abel W.) Streeter, (H. S.) Shepardson and Schuyler McKnight. It seems likely that one of those men were making these patent gimlets before the union, but we don't know which one. The 1869 catalog from New York tool seller Sargent & Co. (page 382) shows this "Patent Double Cut Gimlet Bits" but the maker is not identified. | |
