| The patent adds a handle and a rubber nut retainer to "the ordinary carriage wrench." The drawing shows this feature as a rubber ring and notches in the socket. The specifications make a broader claim for including a rubber gripper of some sort in the socket.
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" reprints an 1873 "Scientific American" item indicating the wrench was produced with a rubber roller in one side of the socket rather than the rubber ring shown in the patent drawings.
Some wrenches marked with the patent date have two or three "box" sizes. |
