 Atwater's TIGER wrench (FLICKR)

| Description: | | The adjusting mechanism within the movable jaw of this wrench incorporates the wedging action of an eccentric cam. Atwater patented this principle as applied to a sliding jaw clamp on August 13, 1878 (Pat. no. 206,851). In this patent this cam wheel is shifted by a lever, and pushed toward engagement by a spring. The comparable Canadian patent no. is CA-18,046 and the British patent is GB-188302598 registered May 24, 1883.
The UTILITY WRENCH -- also known as Atwater's Tiger Wrench -- bears both patent dates. | |
