Description: |
The patented feature is a slightly tapered rectangular or triangular bit which can be driven out and rotated to provide three or four sharp biting surfaces before it needs to be sharpened or replaced. This feature appeared in other tongs type pipe wrenches.
1884 and 1892 OIL WELL SUPPLY catalogs list "LAY'S PATENT TONG - all sizes from 3/4 to 12 inch" along with "extra bits." A known example is a 78 inch monster that weighs over 80 pounds.
Corresponding British patent GB-187803666 was registered Sept. 17, 1878. |
