Description: |
Two dies hold the shank and provide a socket for the lower portion of the head. The third die upsets the metal and forms the top surface of the head. This set of dies and related forging steps makes provision for excess metal to form "fins" which are later trimmed off. Champman calls this an improvement on his Feb. 4, 1873 patent (no. 135,406).
Collins monkey wrenches produced after this time may shown signs of having been forged this way upon close examination. |
