| Description: | | Ezra L'Hommedieu was a ship carver who invented the double-twist auger, patented here. He went on to manufacture this tool, receiving several additional patents for augers, gimlets, and their manufacture. Two patents, granted 1830-10-01 and 1835-02-11 were lost in the 1836 patent-office fire and were not restored.
Directory of American Toolmakers (DAT) has a fair bit of information on L'Hommedieu. L'Hommedieu's manufacturing operations were purchased in 1879 by Henry L. Shailer, who already held an auger patent. Shailer ran the factory himself for a time, but in 1881 he sold the operations to his father-in-law: Russell Jennings. | |
