Description:
One of these tools is pictured in the Farm Collector Mystery Tools book. Known example marked with two patent dates: Sept. 29, 03 & Nov. 3, 03.

From the specifications: "This invention relates to improvements in hay-tools, and more specifically to what are known as "compression-sling " attachments, being in the nature of a device for use in connection with a sling to enable the same to be used in connection with a carrier in the place of a fork. The object of the invention is to provide a device which may be used in connecting any form of an ordinary hay-carrier without making any change whatever except disconnecting the hayfork from the fork-pulley and substituting the attachment which I have devised, using the same in connection with a suitable sling."

The specifications also note patent 554,136 as pertinent. The images of Fig. 4 & Fig.5 of the patent drawings show the device in action.
