| The hook's shape is to allow uneven movement of draft animals to not affect the straightness of the furrow, and to allow a single tree to easily be detached. 
It appears in a McKinnon's Patent Plow Clevis advertised in the mid-1890s. An IRON AGE write-up for the clevis noted the wrench-headed pin fit two sizes of nuts. |
