Description: |
This design patent covers the ubiquitous Pizza Hut building. The architect, Richard D. Burke, had been a fraternity brother of the Pizza Hut founders, brothers Dan and Frank Carney. The brothers could not afford his fee so they agreed on a payment of $100 per Pizza Hut built. In 2016 Pizza Hut announced that they were discontinuing this building design in favor a of "sleeker, more modern design to support increased demand for delivery." By that time over 6000 of the original design had been built—most of them during the 20th century—but about half had closed as consumer demand had weakened for sit-down pizza restaurants. Many of those former restaurants have been repurposed but are still instantly recognizable due to their iconic shape. |
