Description: |
This patent covers what became known as the Torx screw and associated screwdriver. One design goal was to reduce the size of the fastener—hex headed bolt heads could not be made very small due to the high stresses imposed on the corners of the heads; another option was spline-drive screws but these were expensive to manufacture and have too many stress risers due to the sharp corners. The proposed solution is a "hex-lobular surface configuration for use between complementary interfitting driver and driven units..." This solution was claimed to allow smaller heads, have little likelihood of cam-out or failure of either the driver or the screw head.Trademark Registration number 1040018, for "Torx", claims first use March 1967, and the applicant was "Textron Inc. dba Camcar Screw & Mfg. Co., 600 18th Ave., Rockford, IL." |
