"SURPRISE CALF WEANER" from 1891 IRON AGE (FLICKR)
Description:
Heavy wires forming a halter-like frame, with connecting link, and twisted together at the front to form prongs. Improved by 436,655, where the prongs are reinforced by a wrapping stamped from sheet metal.

Circumstances of design, timing and location lead to the conclusion this (as improved) was realized as the F.D. KEES (Beatrice, NE) "Surprise" weaner. An 1891 write-up for the weaner notes "developed by a practical farmer" and "a concave is attached to the prongs to stiffen them." It is one of six calf weaners shown in an 1891 HIBBARD, SPENCER, BARTLETT & Co. catalog. In a 1905 "reminisce," Kees remarked this weaner was not a financial success.
