Description:
This patent covers an application of what became known as the Edison effect. Thomas Edison had noticed that if a metal plate is put inside the glass envelope of a light bulb, current can flow from the filament to the plate, provided the plate is given a positive charge and not a negative charge. What Edison had created was the first vacuum tube and the first rectifier, or diode. This invention was decades ahead of its time and it is only in hindsight that we recognize its significance. Edison did nothing with it, nor did anyone else.
