| An article in the 1924-04-01 Farm Machinery and Hardware, page 10, gives background on the recently incorporated Gravely Motor Plow & Cultivator Co. The Mr. Gravely is quoted. "...Patents were applied for, and granted. This is where our troubles started. In exchange for the paltry sum of $85.00, generous Uncle Same handed us, tied with a blue ribbon, a document called 'Letters Patent,' giving us the sole and exclusive job of breeding, rearing and disposing of this particular bred for a period of seventeen years, along with the anxieties and responsibilities that go with such duties. It was then up to us to produce the goods."Before offering the machine to the public, we spent four years refining, testing and developing it to the highest point of efficiency and service, sparing neither pains nor expense in making a practical, ideal cultivator. We have tested it in all kinds of soil, from the rocky hillsides of West Virginia to the soft sands and spongy muck lands of Florida, and we have cultivated all kinds and all sizes of vegetation, in rows from 6 inches to 4 feet in width, with wonderful success..." Accompanying illustrations show the Gravely cultivator and their new factory. |
