| Boyd replaces the solid metal screw-top lid of the original Mason jar (patent 22,186 with a milk-glass insert held on by a threaded metal ring. This had dual benefits: it prevented any contact between the metal of the lid and the possibly acidic contents, and it reduced the amount of metal involved, and at that time metal was more expensive than glass.Boyd owned the Sheet Metal Screw Co. which had licensed Mason's original patent. In December 1871 Boyd and Mason and others formed the Consolidated Fruit Jar Co. to take over the manufacture of Mason jars. |
