Gordon Automatic - edited (FLICKR)
Description:
An improvement to Gordon's pat. no. 1,407,528 for a combination screw - and quick-adjust open end wrench. In this improvement, the adjusting worm sets in a sliding carrier with a compression spring to hold the adjusting worm in engagement with the rack teeth on the movable jaw. A compression spring in the frame pushes the movable jaw to "full open" position when the adjusting worm is disengaged from the rack on the movable jaw.

Known examples marked GORDON AUTOMATIC. PATENT APPLIED FOR. -- 6, 8, and 10 inch sizes are known; corresponding to a full page ad in Sept. 27, 1923 AMERICAN MACHINIST which shows this wrench along with the "monkey wrench" (see also patent no. 1,380,794). A February 1923 write-up in MACHINERY also describes a pipe wrench which appears to correspond to patent no. 1,618,820.
