| Description: | | The patented feature is the cubical gripping bit in the lower jaw. It is held in its socket by a cross bar and adjusting screw. A Board of Commissioner of Patents decision in 1880 removed Banister and left Lovrien as sole patentee. (A summary of the case appears on pg. 152 of the Sept. 4, 1880 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN).
Patent no. 234,304 is essentially an improvement of this patent incorporating a size adjusting screw. It is the patent reflected in markings on known examples of the tools produced.
This non-adjustable tongs is noted as being produced in an Aug. 27, 1880 ILLUSTRATED CARPENTER AND BUILDER "write-up" describing the size adjustable version. | |
