Griffith v. Shaw, et. al. (1898)
Description:
A smooth wire muzzle attached to a leather strap is set up to swing up sufficiently to allow grazing and drinking, but drops over the front of the nose and mouth to prevent sucking when the head is raised.

Advertising notes the smooth muzzle does not irritate or injure the udder which is the target of the attempted sucking. An 1892 write-up for Shaw's Calf Weaner names the manufacturer. A 1901 PHARMACEUTICAL JOURNAL write-up shows SHAW'S PATENT weaner available in London.

The patent was the subject of a patent infringement lawsuit (Griffith v. Shaw, et. al.) The finding was the claim in this patent was very narrow and not infringed by Shaw's subsequent patent 495,378 An 1898 IRON AGE item about the Carroll Muzzle Co. notes the lawsuit, and the "SMOOTH WIRE CALF WEANER."
