Description:
The main focus of the patent is the shape of the jaws to hold the opposing corners of a range of sizes of square nuts.

Corresponding June 14, 1897 Canadian patent no. CA-56,258 includes a pipe grip jaw attachment, and gives the full names of both principals. Corresponding British patent GB-189703835 has Thomas Tinsley of Waco, TX as the second applicant, and a different style of drawing.

Some Wm. Hjorth plier wrenches marked with this patent date may be anticipating A. W. Hjorth's Sept. 8, 1903 patent (no. 738,444). The America Co. Rockford, ILL LIGHTNING WRENCH based on this patent was produced in larger sizes than the corresponding tools from other makers. The wire cutter notch on the Hjorth tool is between the jaws; the America Co. tool has the wire cutter on one side.
